Latch Applications

Types of Applications

Server Rack latches and handles should have a “quality” look and feel, Swinghandles are usually the latch of choice, they offer nice a appearance, ability to latch at two points for overlapping rear doors, and a wide variety of security levels including a combination lock and electronic access control. Master key systems are available. Side panels often require locking, the EMKA 1091-U143 is robust, inexpensive and can be closed when locked.

See also EMKA hinges which allow 180º opening and easy door removal. Click front for front door hinges and rear for rear door hinges.

Electrical boxes are usually secured with quarter turn type latches, often using double bit tool. Housings with foam-in-place gasket are preferred. To meet NEMA 4 and UL more than one latching point is often required, the number depends on the design of the enclosure including the stiffness of the door and the type of gasketing used; with foam gasket multi-point latching will be needed for enclosures longer than about 24” with bulb type gasket one latch will probably be fine up to 30” or so.

Where multiple latching points are needed the least expensive approach is to use independent quarter turns however this is inconvenient and leaves the possibility that not all the latches will be closed, resulting in leaks. Some regulations require “defeater” handles, click here for heavy duty defeater handles.

Telecomm enclosures (GR 487) - Special swinghandles have been developed to meet GR 487 corrosion, torque, sealing etc. requirements. These include a “push to lock” feature. Please ask for 1150-SU57 & 58. Other GR 487 products include gasketing, hinges and door stops.
